Well, hey there! Let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout fishin’ in Saginaw Bay. I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen a thing or two, and I know what folks are catchin’.
Fishin’ in Saginaw Bay, it’s somethin’ else! Folks been tellin’ me they catchin’ them yellow perch, ya know, the ones about this long? Twelve, fourteen inches, they say. Near them buoys, number one and two, in the deep water, thirty feet down. That’s what they tell me, over on the east side of that Spoils Island.
- Yellow Perch: Good eatin’, them yellow perch. Folks catchin’ ’em good size, too.
- Walleye: Now, walleye, that’s a fish worth catchin’. Heard tell they hangin’ around that Dredge Island, after they done their business in the spring. They like that rip-rap stuff, chasin’ the little baitfish.
- Salmon: Salmon, now, them’s big fish. Big Manistee and Pere Marquette rivers, that’s where they at now. Muskegon River, they come later. Best time? Late summer, early fall. September and October, that’s the ticket.
- Other Fish: Seen some folks catchin’ smallmouth bass, bluegill, and them pumpkinseed fish, too. Pretty little things, them pumpkinseeds.
Out on the Fox River, see some boats. They fishin’ for walleye and musky. Big fish, them muskies. But ain’t heard of too many folks catchin’ ’em. One fella, he caught one trollin’ with them crankbaits, he did.
Some folks say Saginaw Bay and River, they good for ice fishin’ too. Lots of fish under that ice, they say. Walleye and yellow perch, mostly. But I ain’t much for sittin’ on a bucket in the cold. Give me a warm day and a boat, that’s my kinda fishin’.
This DNR, they put out this fishin’ report, tellin’ ya what’s what. Where to go, what they catchin’. But I tell ya, the best way to know is to go out there and see for yourself. Talk to the folks fishin’, they’ll tell ya the real story. This report, it’s just a start.
They got this place online, too. A discussion thing. Folks askin’ questions, sharin’ tips, showin’ off their fish pictures. That’s a good place to learn a thing or two. If you got questions, you can ask ’em there. If you got complaints, well, you can complain there too, I guess.
They say you can sign up to get them fishin’ reports sent to ya. I ain’t done that, myself. I just go fishin’ when I can, and I see what I see. But some folks like to know ahead of time, I guess. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.
So, that’s the lowdown on Saginaw Bay fishin’, as best as I can tell ya. Go on out there, wet a line, and see what you can catch. And if you see me out there, give me a holler! We can swap some fishin’ stories, maybe.
Remember, fishin’ ain’t just about catchin’ fish. It’s about bein’ out there, enjoyin’ the water, enjoyin’ the day. And if you catch a fish or two, well, that’s just a bonus. And always be safe, respect the water, and leave things as you found them.
