Well, now, I reckon if you’re lookin’ to fish in that Little Deschutes River, you oughta know a few things. First off, it ain’t no big river like them other ones out there, but it’s got its own charm, you see. I heard folks sayin’ it’s home to some fine wild fish like rainbow trout and even some bull trout. They need that cool, clear water to live, and it’s mighty important for them fish to survive in that little stream. Without that, I reckon they wouldn’t last long.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ it’s the best place for fishin’, but for those of you that enjoy the quiet, peaceful waters and a bit of a challenge, well, it’s got its moments. You ain’t gonna find a whole lot of big ol’ trout swimming around like in some of them other rivers, but you might catch a few if you’re patient enough. I think there’s somethin’ special about fishin’ in a place like this. It’s peaceful, and if you ain’t in too big a hurry, you might just find yourself a nice little spot.
The fishin’ season on the Little Deschutes is a bit picky, though. You gotta be careful about where you’re fishin’. Down by that dam, they got some special rules. I heard the season down there don’t start until April 22nd, and it’s only open from the dam to the northern boundary of the Warm Springs Reservation. I reckon if you plan to fish there, you best check up on them rules before ya go. Other parts of the river, though, they let ya fish all year long. So if you’re not too particular about where you’re fishin’, you can come back anytime you want.
But, I gotta warn ya, not every spot is easy to get to. Some of them places by the river are sittin’ on private land, tucked away behind gates. So don’t go thinkin’ you can just march on in there like you own the place. Best to stick to the public access spots, or else you might find yourself in a heap of trouble.
Now, I reckon a lot of folks go fishin’ for the fun of it, but don’t expect to haul in a big ol’ bucket of fish. The Little Deschutes isn’t the kind of river where you’re gonna fill up your cooler with big catches. There just ain’t enough of them big fish swimmin’ around. Maybe it’s the river, or maybe there’s other things keepin’ the fish from growin’ too big. Either way, you best be prepared to work for what you get, and don’t go expectin’ a big ol’ fish fry at the end of the day. But hey, it’s still nice to sit by the river, let the world pass by, and maybe catch a fish or two along the way.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about headin’ out to fish the Little Deschutes River, just remember it ain’t the easiest place to catch a big ol’ trout, but it sure does have its own little magic. Take your time, respect the rules, and who knows, you might get lucky and pull somethin’ good outta that clear water. And even if you don’t, at least you got the peace and quiet of the river to keep you company. Ain’t nothin’ better than a bit of quiet time on the water, even if the fish ain’t bitin’ that day.
